1. What is the math placement test and do I have to take it?
The math placement test is mandatory for all first year students, regardless if they have AP credit. This test covers basic Algebra which is comparable to high school level Algebra II. The math placement test does not contain any material on trigonometry. Calculators are not permitted.

2. Do I need to take the foreign language placement exam?

FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TESTS

Students majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences must demonstrate 1202 level competence to fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences language requirement.  American Sign Language is also accepted.  Students majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences should also check whether there are requirements beyond the above in their majors.  If there are such requirements, they should verify with the UNC Charlotte Undergraduate Catalog to make sure that the language they are interested in is taught through the level required by their program.

Students in other colleges are not required to take foreign language courses, unless it is a related course requirement in their major.  All UNC Charlotte students are encouraged to study a foreign language as a part of their undergraduate education.

Students required or wishing to take a foreign language in any program will need to take the Foreign Language Placement Exam during SOAR if they have prior experience in the language.

Students with no prior experience in the language they wish to pursue do not need to take the placement exam. These students will begin in the first level of the foreign language they will pursue.

Students who are receiving UNC Charlotte transfer credit, AP or CLEP credit for completion of the first year of a college-level foreign language have met the College of Arts and Sciences language requirement. These students do not need to take the placement exam unless they plan to continue their study of the language in which they have received credit.

Additional questions about foreign language requirements may be directed to the Department of Languages and Culture Studies at (704) 687-8754.
